CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry

The SafeWork NSW White Card is a mandatory requirement for anyone wanting to work on a construction site in NSW. This one day, face to face, General Construction Induction training course gets you your White Card with nothing further to pay.

This Course covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

White Card Course in NSW

Unit of competency: CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry

Course outcome: Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a National Statement of Attainment in ‘CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry.’ Participants will also receive an interim SafeWork Statement of attainment that allows them to work immediately on construction sites across NSW. Participants will then receive their White Card direct from SafeWork. All SafeWork White Card fees are included in your Training course fees. You will have nothing further to pay to receive your White card.

Entry requirements:

An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

Proof of age – must be 14 years or over.
Valid working email address.
Points of current and valid identification (including Photographic ID) please refer to the Evidence of Identity requirements. You will be provided with an Evidence of Identification Checklist (EOI) to complete on enrolment.
Physical capacity to demonstrate the correct donning and removing of PPE for assessment.
This course is for New South Wales only. Students undertaking this course must be a resident of the state in which the course is being undertaken.

Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending the face to face session depending on the course delivery mode.

Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

  • Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours (including breaks)

Course content:

  • Work Health and Safety legislation.
  • Understanding and identifying hazards and risks on construction sites.
  • How to control risks and prevent accidents on construction sites

Assessment requirements: Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written, oral, and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment of this unit consists of three assessment tasks:

  • Answering a series of multiple choice and short answer written questions.
  • Answering a series of short answer oral questions.
  • Observation of learners demonstrating the correct fitting of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items.

  • You MUST bring 100 points of identification on the day. Ideally a photo ID such as an Australian driver’s licence or passport plus another form of ID.

White Card (NSW) – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a White Card?

A White Card (General Construction Induction) is required for anyone working on a construction site in Australia. It confirms you have completed approved safety training and understand basic site safety requirements.


Do I need a White Card to work in construction in NSW?

Yes. In NSW, you must hold a valid White Card before entering a construction site. This includes labourers, apprentices, work experience students and site visitors.


Is the White Card nationally recognised?

Yes. A White Card is recognised across all Australian states and territories, provided it has been issued by an approved training provider.


How long does the White Card course take?

The White Card course is completed in one day. Training runs for a minimum of approximately 6 hours plus breaks.


Can I complete my White Card in one day?

Yes. Training and assessment are completed on the same day. Successful participants receive their certification once all requirements are met.


Is the White Card course face‑to‑face?

Yes. In NSW, White Card training must be completed face‑to‑face. Online‑only White Card courses are not accepted.


Where is the White Card course held?

White Card courses are delivered at Excite Safety in Caringbah NSW, in an approved training facility. Full venue details are provided after booking.

What identification do I need?

You must provide 100 points of ID or approved alternatives in line with SafeWork NSW requirements. ID is checked on the day of training.


Do international students or visitors need different ID?

Yes. International participants generally need a passport and additional identification depending on visa status and length of stay in Australia.


Do I need a USI (Unique Student Identifier)?

Yes. A USI is required for all nationally recognised training. You can create one free of charge before the course or on the day.


Is there a minimum age to complete a White Card?

Participants are generally required to be at least 14 years old. Additional site‑specific rules may apply depending on the workplace.


What happens if I don’t pass the assessment?

If you do not successfully complete the assessment, the trainer will explain your options, which may include additional support or re‑assessment.


How long is a White Card valid for?

A White Card does not expire, provided you remain active in the construction industry. If you leave the industry for an extended period, you may be required to re‑complete training.


Do you offer group or workplace White Card training?

Yes. We offer private White Card courses for businesses, schools and organisations, either at our facility or on‑site (subject to requirements).


What should I bring on the day?

Please bring:

  • Valid ID
  • Your USI (or details to create one)
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for a classroom environment
