This is Part 2 of 4 part series (read Part 1 here) looking at some of the major cost benefits to business owners and employers who invest in safety.

Safe workers are productive workers

This is one of the not so easy to define benefits.  But there are a few ways to measure if the health & safety program you have implemented is having an effect on productivity.

Are there less injuries and/or workers compensation claims? This is the prime objective for implementing good safety procedures, and providing appropriate equipment and training. This should be one of the first benefits you notice.

Are your staff taking less sick days?  If you have a good health & safety program in place you should find that workers are less stressed & fatigued, and are in better mental and physical health, therefore don’t need to take as many sick days.

Is there less downtime? Sure you will have to schedule some time out for drills, training and/or maintenance. There should be a reduction in unscheduled downtime as well trained staff make less mistakes.  Having a known plan for emergencies and other interruptions in place should also allow production to return to normal in the shortest possible time should there be an incident of some sort.

Has the “vibe” in the workplace changed for the better?  In general if your staff feel secure and safe in their work environment then they will be happier.  Happy staff are more likely to contribute to the business above and beyond their paid role.   A good health & safety program and the promotion of a safety culture will contribute to that feeling of security and happiness.

So the next time you are considering a safety related expense, remember to add in all the possible production benefits as part of the equation.
