We love Australia Day because it is the day when we celebrate all the things we love about our great country. Here in Sydney, being on or by the water is a big part of the celebrations for many Aussies.
There are major celebrations on Sydney Harbour with the ferry races, fireworks and much more. Waterways north and south of the Harbour will be brimming with boats and other craft enjoying the long weekend.
When it comes to surviving the boating frenzy that is Australia Day on the water in Sydney there are a couple of things you should know
- Rage.
Boat rage is a real thing …. Crowds + heat = short tempers. We all just want to have a good time, so don’t let somebody else’s lack of consideration ruin your day, don’t be sucked in by someone else’s aggro. At the boat ramp or out on the water – be considerate of others, leave them space and give them time. Smile and say thanks when others do the same for you. A little consideration can be enough to avoid an ugly incident that could have massive repercussions. - Lack of judgement
One of the largest causes of marine incidents is lack of judgement. Not just the by person driving, putting the vessel in a situation they can’t get out of, but also by passengers. Boats move in unexpected ways so extra care is needed by all persons on board. Common issues might include people falling overboard, jumping from upper decks and missing the water, or slipping between the boat and wharf. Also go easy on the booze if you are boating, alcohol can affect you & your judgement much more rapidly on the water. - Inexperience
Australia Day can be overwhelmingly busy if you are a novice boatie. It is also the time when people with little or no experience are encouraged by their mates on the spur of the moment to “give it a crack”. Australia day is not the day to take up boating for the first time. Get out on the water a few time in the days or weeks leading up to it. Avoid ramp rage by practicing your trailer reversing skills, and getting the boat on and off the trailer until you can do it in as little time as possible. If in doubt, have someone more experienced there to help or wait till next year when you’ve had a bit more practice.
With a little planning and awareness of possible issues we can all have a safe & happy Australia Day.
